Every Word but One

It wasn’t often that Chauncey worked Friday nights, so when he first felt his phone’s pulsing alert, he assumed it was someone sending a party invitation he would regretfully have to decline. He was still coming to terms with the fact that he would spend the night chained to the hotel’s front desk and miss out on all the fun goings-on, so he didn’t even sneak and read the text, like he usually would. He let it sit, unseen, and went on with work. He was an hour into his shift when he got the second, but he was busy with a guest and didn’t even notice it had come through. The third one got his attention but, before he could even open it, there was a fourth. They were all from Julius. This was a name he hadn’t seen in some time. He wasn’t familiar enough with Julius for him to be sending him four texts in a row like this and never had been, really. So before Chauncey even read them, he was uneasy.
